Ever heard of a Sea that disappeared? That is exactly what happened to Aral Sea.. Also referred to as the "Sea of Islands" or the "Aral Desert"
It is noted as "one of the planets worst environmental disasters."
Aral Sea was located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It used to be one of the 4 largest lakes in the world and now, it has become more of a desert!
The eastern basin of the sea completely dried up by 2014 and is now referred to as The Aralkum Desert.
Satellites have helped capture the effects of this shrinkage. Currently, less than 10% of the sea remains and it houses what remains of several shipwrecks.
It has been a goal of the Government of Kazakhstan to help in expanding the sea back to former shores, raising the water levels. This effort would enable the water to return in approximately 17 years.
However, the government is currently, focused on improving the living conditions of the people around the area.
This would be a spectacular and much needed effort to help bring this sea back to life!
