Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Nestled beween Pāhale and Nā'ālehu in Hawaii, you will find the amazing Punalu'u Beach.
Also known as Black Beach Hawaii or Black Sand Beach, the sand is made up of basalt and lava which flows into the ocean and explodes upon reaching it. Then it cools down giving the sand its black colour!
FUN FACT: Some tourists and visitors actually take some sand as souvenirs! There is a sign on the beach that says no to this though. (hehe !)
Punalu'u is often visited by endangered green turtles and hawksbill. The beach has very cold underground fresh water that flows continuously. Legend has it that in times of drought, ancient Hawaiins would dive into the water with jugs in order to get cold fresh water!
This beach has rocky swimming areas and is often dangerous to swim in but you can always enjoy the views, the ocean vibes and sink your feet in the black sand.
Now this is a beach KANGA absolutely loves!
